Hoh Moon, executive vice chairman of the Korea Automobile Manufacturers' Association (KAMA) and president of the Organizing Committee for the Seoul Motor Show had an interview with the Korea IT Times on the occasion of the upcoming Seoul Motor Show 2009. He spoke about preparations and expectations of the show, environmentally- friendly cars of the future, and the exhibits visitors will be able to see this year.

Preparations and Expectations

This year the committee decided to prolong the show's hours to 8pm, allowing visitors more time to look around the exhibition.

Also, the show has an interesting event, the Daily Car Raffle, which involves giving away twelve cars to lucky visitors. This event only provided one free car per day in previous years, but this time two cars will be given away on the first Sunday and the second Saturday of the show.

In addition, the committee created a World Automotive History Hall. The hall will exhibit classic cars such as the Benz Petant, the first car ever created with an internal combustion engine using gasoline, and the Hillman Stright 8 that was made with cedar, one of only six in the whole world. The hall would be present for children to be educated about old cars, teaching them the root of car history.

The show has other interesting formal events. These are the Best Car of the Show Awards, a Collegian Self-made Car Contest, a Collegian Car Design Contest, a Photo and UCC Contest, a Go-Kart Driving Event, a Simulated Driving Experience, and a Professional Photographer Exhibition.

The committee expects the show to create demand for cars and stimulate the depressed domestic car market. The economic effect of the show is hoped to be 800 billion won (US$592.2 million) involving employment, production, tourism, and distribution. In addition, the committee estimates the show will attract over a million visitors, over 10 thousand foreign buyers, and export consultation on the scale of US$1.2 billion. Moreover, the show is expected to affect the domestic exhibition industry and spread Korean culture.

Environmentally-friendly Cars of the Future

Green growth is a hot issue in the world, thus the trend in the automobile field is eco-friendly and highly efficient too. World class car companies also focus on Green cars such as hybrid cars and fuel cell cars. Korea's auto industry has the advantage of compact car design; its technology is second to none. Moreover, through the show, the committee expects the paradigm of Korean cars in the future to turn to environmentally-friendly cars. It is a national goal, as President Lee said.
